RED RIBBON WEEK!

Students in grades three through five learned about the dangers of vaping or using e-cigarettes.  Did you know that the female brain is not fully developed until the age of 25 years, while a male brain is not fully developed until 26/27 years-old?  One e-cigarette contains as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes.  While e-cigarettes were developed for adults wanting to quit smoking, e-cigarettes have terrible ramifications for the developing teen brain such as; reduced cognition, impulsivity, and reduced ability to focus.  Please feel free to watch the attached videos.  I also included the Legacy of Enrique Camarena, as RED RIBBON WEEK was created in his honor and a video of his son who is now a Superior Court Judge in San Diego speak about RED RIBBON WEEK.

Guidance Classes Are Off to A GREAT Start!

This year students continue to work on developing self-control through the Zones of Regulation Curriculum as well as working together as a team. When students learn to identify which zone their bodies, hearts, and minds are in they are able to slow down and make more effective choices that help to enhance their self-confidence. Students are also more empathetic and supportive of one another creating a safer and more effective learning environment. Enclosed is the poster used to help students self-regulate their behavior in the classroom. Students’ best learning occurs in the GREEN ZONE. As a team it is up to us to be supportive on one another.

Also feel free to purchase the online game for the Zones of Regulation. You can purchase the Zones of Regulation App here; http://www.zonesofregulation.com/the-zones-of-regulation-app.html   This online game won The Parents Choice Award a few years back. It does a nice job of reinforcing the concepts taught in class.

Here is an excellent article on how to raise a kind child. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2014/07/18/are-you-raising-nice-kids-a-harvard-psychologist-gives-5-ways-to-raise-them-to-be-kind/?utm_term=.b62a6316475e

Here are some excellent stories to read aloud with your child.

Salem Elementary Awards Ceremony

We had several students who earned awards yesterday.  Some of them include perfect attendance, music and honor choir participants, reading awards, and 5th grade presidential awards.  We are very proud of all the students’ hard work this year!

A special THANKS to the PTA for all of their support this year! Thank you to the parents who came to support their students yesterday!

Salem Spotlight: Lisa Syfert

Hi! My name is Lisa Syfert. I am a proud alumnus of Salem Elementary and am extremely excited to have the opportunity, in the role of Math Coach, to work with the students and staff at Salem! My family consists of my husband, Jerad, and our four children who, as of next year, attend Salem:  Colton, Charlie, Ruby, and Elizabeth (aka Livvie). We enjoy playing all kinds of sports, hunting, trekking in the timber, being outside, reading, watching movies, playing games, wondering about the world, and just having a good time =)

1st Grader Taking Initiative!

After learning about recycling, first grader, Scotty Redgate, took it upon himself to create a recycling container for the classroom. His mom is going to take the papers to the recycling center when the box is full. We are really proud of Scotty for his creativity! One side of the box is for paper and the other for cardboard!! Way to go Scotty!
